This is a term that generally means different sources of energy that are environmentally friendly and do not pollute the earth or add to the problem of global warming. Many companies and businesses seek to purchase green energy to help reduce the problems with occur with using energy that is not green and to help the progress of green energy.

A Company gets a green certificate, which proves that the company or individual is using green renewable energy sources, over one million homes in America and 35 million in Europe have purchased these. Alternatively energy derived from sources that pollute the earth can be referred to as brown energy. Green energy is a way of harnessing power from natural elements in a way that caused very little or no pollution al all.

In many countries consumers are able to purchase green electricity however this is relatively small scale the majority of electricity id generated from fossil fuel, the figures are approximately 2 to 5% from green energy. If more consumers purchased green energy they could pressure the utility companies to buy more green energy from the main source. In the Netherlands for instance electricity companies have agreed to purchase an equal amount of green power as is used by their green power consumers they have also exempted green power from pollution taxes.
