Water and life are interconnected. Throughout the ages and today this has been and always be seen and recognised, without water molecules no enzymes can work.
There is no other substitute for water the planet is over 50% water and is in fact very common in the universe, it has been found as gaseous molecules, as amorphous ice in microscopic grains and massive asteroids, comets and planets, however to exist in a liquid form as it does on earth it requires exact conditions that only exist on earth, it is believed that all water original from comets and asteroids after the earth was created (it would have been completely solid until this time)
Without this water life would never of started in the first place, although it is still a matter of great discussion as to how this occurred, the only common factor in all discussions is that the presence of water was essential in creating life.
The properties in water are unique as they are vital and cannot be replicated, the hydrogen-bonded environment is what gives water these essential properties.
