Production Standards

Production Standards, Organic Foods, Agricultural, UK Eco Food!

Organic foods have to pass certain standards to qualify as being “organic” special certification is required in the European Union, the USA and many other countries before any food can be sold as organic within those countries. These certifications do let a certain amount of chemicals and pesticides, so contrary to popular belief organic does not mean completely free of pesticides and chemicals, although their usage is hugely restricted.

Many centuries ago agricultural practises were always organic, however in the early 20th century many new chemicals (some untested) were introduced as an improvement ton regular agricultural processes. Ironically this style of agriculture is called “conventional” although the organic way of farming is a much older practice.

If animals are in used they must not be exposed to any antibiotics or the usage of growth hormones, they also are fed healthier food and must not be fed on anything genetically modified. The whole industry is a very heavily restricted and monitored practice.

Organic farms have usually been small family run farms, hence the reason they were traditionally available in small shops and markets, but in the 90’s it has grown substantially by around 20% a year. This trend has been happening in both developed and developing countries. From April 08 organic food takes up around 1-2% of food world wide.
